Information About Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable, unwanted thoughts and repetitive, ritualized behaviors you feel compelled to perform. When and if you have OCD you probably would realize that some behaviors and thoughts are irrational and really repetitive but you have no control over it no matter how bad you don't want to do it. OCD causes the brain to obsess over a certain topic, thought or urge. Things like touching your door knob twenty, thirty maybe even fifty times just to make sure that it is locked, screaming something random once entering or exiting your vehicle are examples of things some people might do if they have OCD.


Understanding OCD
Obsessions are uncomfortable thoughts that stay in your head, no matter how much you don't want to think about them they just stay in your head and get more and more intense. Compulsions are the actions or can be called rituals that are uncontrollable and embarrassing, but also no matter how ridiculous the so called rituals are they can't be controlled. There are five major categories that people fall under if they have OCD.

Washers- Are afraid of contamination and usually wash their hands excessivelyCheckers- Go back and check things repeatedly that could be dangerous Doubters and Sinners- Are afraid that if something isn't perfectly done then they fear something bad will happenCounters and Arrangers- Are obsessed with order and symmetry Hoarders- Fear that something bad will happen if they throw anything away

Signs of OCD
Most people who have OCD suffer from both obsessions and compulsions, but some people just suffer from one or the other. Just because you have obsessive thought or any compulsive actions doesn't mean that you have OCD. A lot of people just think they have it but they really don't.

Common Compulsive Thoughts *excessive double checking*repeatedly checking in with loved ones to make sure they are ok*spending a lot of time washing and cleaning

Four Steps to Conquer OCDRELABEL – Recognize that the intrusive obsessive thoughts and urges are the result of OCD.REATTRIBUTE – Realize that the intensity and intrusiveness of the thought or urge is caused by OCD; it is probably related to a biochemical imbalance in the brain.REFOCUS – Work around the OCD thoughts by focusing your attention on something else, at least for a few minutes. Do another behavior.REVALUE – Do not take the OCD thought at face value. It is not significant in itself.
